Most verbs follow a general rule when used with the preposition à. Usually the indirect object pronouns are used, however, there are some exceptions to this rule, but in this example the general rule is followed.
In this audio clip we hear the sentence with the indirect object pronoun: Tu leur écris? (Do you write (to) them?).
